Today Sigrið Nicodemussen is going to review a good book for us:

Difficult Reading Books?

If you find it hard to read books and don’t think you have the time for it, I want to tell you that I’ve been there. I thought that too.

A normal school day I tried to read Girl Defined in the breaks and in the buss on my way home, and you know what? I completed the book that day! You have a golden opportunity to read in the buss if you happen to take it often.

Girl Defined

Girl DefinedThe sisters Kristen and Bethany from Texas hava written the book “Girl Defined”. This was a book they wished they’ve had themselves when they were younger. The book defines what Biblical beauty is compared to what the world tells us. Marilyn Monroe, for instance, was one example of how the “perfect” woman was defined and described in the 50s. But this changes the whole time if we are to look for the world to define what beauty is.

Should I be thin? long? short?

The world changes all the time, and it’s impossible to follow everything the world says. One day it could be modern to have bangs and short hair, and the next day it could be having long hair. Thick eyebrows one day and thin eyebrows the next day. If we ask “What is beauty?” the world will have many explanations.

What Does The Bible Say?

The Bible gives us an explanation on how women and girls ought to be; how we can be beautiful.

The Sisters

Girl DefinedKristen and Bethany were both in their late twenties when they wrote the book. Kristen is married but has no children, and Bethany is single (Bethany was single when she wrote the book). We follow their thoughts during the book.

The book gives examples from reality on how God used women in the Bible, although their background and life weren’t perfect. Esther is one example. She became a queen and ended up being used by God to save the Jews. Mordokai said to Esther in the book of Esher 4:14b: “… who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”. God has placed us where ever we are for a reason.

Between the chapters we find some study guides. After chapter 8 you can fill this in: “If only I had _____ then I’d be happy”

This was interesting. What would you put in there? A boyfriend? Good job? Better friends? Better grades? Another family?

The truth is that nothing on earth can fulfill us. Only Jesus can.

The Bible tells us in Genesis that “God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.”
